On a typical weekday morning in Cambridge, you’ll see it all.
A parent walking a child toward school.
A neighbor heading down Main Street for coffee.
A cyclist passing through town on a quiet loop.
A senior carefully navigating a crosswalk.
A driver making their way to work.
That’s Cambridge. And our streets belong to all of them.
In August 2024, the Village adopted a Complete Streets Implementation Plan to guide how we improve safety, accessibility, and connectivity across our community. The plan focuses on practical, locally grounded improvements, including safer crossings near the school, thoughtful traffic calming, filling sidewalk gaps, improving lighting, and strengthening connections between neighborhoods and downtown.
The vision is simple:
A connected network of streets that enables safe, accessible, and convenient travel for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists of all ages and abilities .
Now, we’re entering the implementation phase.
Before any formal committee is established, the Village is hosting a public Complete Streets Community Workshop on February 25. This is not a formal board meeting and no official committee has yet been created. Rather, it is an opportunity for residents to:
Learn about priority projects
Discuss implementation ideas
Share concerns and perspectives
Express interest in future involvement
We know that streets are more than pavement. They shape daily life.
The intersection of Main and Park Streets connects our downtown businesses with the school and Village Hall . Gilbert Street links neighborhoods to classrooms and services . Academy Street carries both commuters and families. These are not abstract design exercises. They are lived spaces.
Complete Streets does not mean eliminating cars. It means designing streets that work better for everyone. It means making the safe and active choice the easy choice. It means improving what we already have with care and intention.
As we move forward, community input matters.
At the February 25 workshop, attendees will have the opportunity to share their priorities and indicate how they would like to stay involved. That could include serving on the committee, volunteering on specific projects, or simply staying informed.
Cambridge has always moved forward deliberately. We do not rush. We listen, we plan, and we act responsibly.
This is the next step in that process.
We invite you to join the conversation.
